  Shamanism existed before recorded history and is believed to be the oldest spiritual practice in the world based on animism, a world of living energy we call Kawsay. Shamanism has withstood the oppression from governments and religions that perceive it to be a superstitious and primitive practice. Shamanism has always expressed a sharing of common ritual, beliefs, and ceremonial practices without a shared language or direct communication between originating communities. SHI's foundation is predominantly influenced by South American shamanic ceremonies and teachings.
